Shimmery Manicure

6 Apr

Have you been trying to find new nail art ideas that don’t involve tons of colors, tape, or glitter polish? Or maybe you just want something quick and easy to glam up your manicure. Well this Pinterest idea uses two things every girl should own- make up and nail polish.

All you need is some form of a powder pigment, such as an eye shadow, to dust over your freshly painted nails. If you have a loose eye shadow or a shimmer, that would probably work best and be a lot easier (I used a loose shimmer eye shadow). According to the instructions in this pin’s caption, you simply “dab some powder pigment (like eye shadow) above the cuticle before the polish dries and blow the color onto the nail.”

Need To Make A Few Changes

Turns out, this blowing technique doesn’t really work. I had to lightly brush the shimmer onto my nails, starting from the cuticle, with an eye shadow brush. It still had the same effect, just using a different technique. However, make sure you use very light and gentle strokes to apply the shimmer in order to avoid any brush marks, mess up your nail polish, or mess up the brush. On that note, you want your nails to still be freshly painted so that the powder adheres to them, but you don’t want your nails to be so wet that applying the powder will get nail polish everywhere.

Once you’ve added some shimmer to your nails, apply a clear topcoat to seal in the powder. And viola! You’ve got a pinperfect manicure in just minutes.

Matte Nail Polish

22 Mar

Recently, I have been coming across more and more pins featuring matte nail polish. Most polishes that I have found are top-quality, brand name polishes- expensive nail polishes.

This shine-free look definitely caught my eye and seems to be trending right now, but I wasn’t completely sold on it. I figured it was worth a shot, but I didn’t feel like spending $8 on a whole bottle of matte polish.

So of course I search around Pinterest for a DIY matte nail polish tutorial, and I found one pin that seemed simple and straightforward. All you have to do is hold your nails over some steam (I just put a coffee mug with water in the microwave for 90 seconds).

And viola! Matte nail polish. I was honestly shocked that this actually worked but was very pleased with the pinperfect results.

Disclaimer: The matte effect did fade after a few days and the polish began chipping relatively quickly.
